Stay Warm for Less: Shopping Smart for Space Heaters

Home comfort · By the Store Canvas Hub team · 5 min read

When the temperature drops, a good space heater can make a chilly room comfortable in minutes and help you avoid heating the whole house. Shopping online gives you a wide range to compare, but it pays to know which features matter before you click “buy”.

Pick the right type

  • Ceramic heaters warm up quickly and are compact, making them great for bedrooms, offices and under desks.
  • Oil-filled radiators heat more slowly but hold warmth longer and run almost silently.
  • Infrared heaters warm people and objects directly, which works well in drafty spaces or garages.

Size it to your room

A common rule of thumb is about 10 watts of heating power per square foot. A 150 square foot bedroom is well served by a 1,500 watt heater, while a small office may only need a lower setting.

Safety features are non-negotiable

Look for tip-over protection, overheat shut-off and a cool-touch exterior, especially in homes with children or pets. Always plug heaters directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord, and keep them at least three feet from curtains and bedding.

Tip: A heater with a built-in thermostat and timer saves energy by cycling off once the room reaches your chosen temperature.

Getting good value

Prices tend to rise once the first cold snap hits, so buying early in the season often gets you a better deal. Subscribing to store newsletters is an easy way to hear about seasonal offers first.

Pair warmth with comfort

A heater works even better alongside cosy basics like breathable cotton bedding and well-sealed windows. Small changes add up to a warmer home and lower energy bills.
